Union Station Toronto
Historic Glass Flooring Restoration
As part of the revitalization of Toronto’s historic Union Station, TCG Glass manufactured custom structural glass flooring that seamlessly integrates modern performance with one of Canada’s most iconic transportation landmarks. Designed to complement the station’s historic architecture while meeting contemporary structural and safety requirements, the glass floor preserves the character of the original building while introducing light, transparency, and durability to the restored space.
The installation features precision-fabricated structural laminated glass panels with TCG’s proprietary GRIT® anti-slip walking surface, providing safe pedestrian access without compromising the clean, elegant appearance of the historic corridor. The result is a timeless architectural solution that respects the station’s heritage while enhancing the visitor experience for generations to come.

The Story
Originally opened in 1927, Toronto’s Union Station is one of Canada’s most significant historic landmarks and one of the busiest transportation hubs in North America. As part of the station’s extensive revitalization, the design team sought to preserve the building’s historic character while incorporating modern materials that would enhance both safety and the visitor experience.
TCG Glass was selected to manufacture custom structural laminated glass flooring for the restored corridor. Each panel was precision fabricated to integrate seamlessly within the existing steel framing, allowing natural light to pass through the space while maintaining the clean, timeless aesthetic of the historic architecture. The installation complements the original structure rather than competing with it, demonstrating how contemporary architectural glass can be thoughtfully incorporated into heritage buildings.
To ensure safe, long-term performance in a heavily trafficked public environment, the glass flooring incorporates TCG’s proprietary GRIT® anti-slip walking surface. This permanent, slip-resistant finish provides confident footing without obscuring the transparency and visual elegance of the structural glass. The completed installation successfully bridges nearly a century of architectural history, blending preservation with innovation in one of Canada’s most recognizable public spaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of glass flooring was used at Union Station Toronto?
The project features custom structural laminated glass flooring manufactured by TCG Glass. Each panel was engineered for structural performance while preserving the clean, transparent appearance required for the station’s historic restoration.
