Located in the Berkeley Hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay, the Metro Hotel features a custom structural glass elevator and observation platform fabricated by TCG Glass. The project incorporates laminated walkable glass flooring within a custom steel support structure, creating a transparent pedestrian surface that takes advantage of the property’s dramatic hillside setting and panoramic Bay Area views.

Unique Design Challenges:
Constructing a walkable glass floor on an elevated exterior hillside structure required close coordination between the structural steel, glass fabrication, and installation tolerances. Each laminated glass panel was custom manufactured to provide long-term strength, safety, and durability while preserving the open, transparent appearance that makes the installation the centerpiece of the hotel’s exterior design.

The Story
The Metro Hotel sought a distinctive architectural feature that would complement its hillside location and Mediterranean-inspired design. TCG Glass fabricated custom laminated structural glass flooring for the exterior elevator platform, creating a transparent walking surface that offers dramatic views while integrating seamlessly with the custom steel structure.
Engineered for exterior pedestrian traffic, the laminated glass panels provide long-term strength, safety, and durability while maximizing natural light. The finished installation has become one of the hotel’s most distinctive architectural features, combining structural performance with a clean, contemporary aesthetic.
