Oculus "Wedge of Light" Commemorative Glass Floor Inlay, World Trade Center

Inside the Oculus at the World Trade Center, a circular glass floor panel now marks the end point of the "Wedge of Light," the path of sunlight that crosses the concourse each September 11 between 8:46 and 10:28 a.m. Installed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey ahead of the 25th anniversary, the inlay gives permanent form to a concept from Daniel Libeskind's original master plan. TCG Glass fabricated the walkable glass panel and its reflective inscription.

Unique Design Challenges

The Oculus is one of the busiest public spaces in Manhattan, so the panel had to perform as flooring first: slip-resistant, load-rated for continuous foot traffic, and durable enough for daily cleaning. At the same time the inscription needed to stay legible under changing light, whether in the direct sun of September 11 or the diffused light of an ordinary morning. Setting the glass flush within the stone floor required close coordination of the panel, perimeter framing, and the marble medallion beneath it so the finished surface reads as a single, uninterrupted plane. The result is a piece that functions as a floor every day of the year and as a memorial on one.
