701 Whaley
Historic Pool Renovation
Beneath this remarkable structural glass floor lies the original swimming pool of Columbia’s historic 701 Whaley building. Rather than removing or concealing this unique piece of history during the building’s transformation into a premier event venue, the design team chose to preserve it beneath custom structural glass manufactured by TCG Glass.
Today, the pool serves as the centerpiece of one of South Carolina’s most distinctive event venues, where guests can literally walk through history.

The Story
Originally constructed in the early 1900s, 701 Whaley has long been one of Columbia’s most recognizable historic buildings. During its transformation into a premier event venue, the original indoor swimming pool presented a unique opportunity.
Rather than filling or removing the pool, the design team chose to preserve this historic feature by spanning it with TCG Glass’ Glass Sculpt™ structural glass flooring system. The result is a dramatic architectural centerpiece that honors the building’s history while creating valuable event space above.
Today, visitors can walk above the original pool while experiencing one of South Carolina’s most distinctive event venues.
